Features of San Matías Gulf
Location
The San Matías Gulf is the northern one of the north-patagonic gulfs system (between 40º47' and 42º13'S, and between 62º50' and 63º48'W). It constitutes a basin of very particular characteristics in the context of the argentine maritime littoral. Besides of being the biggest gulf of the system (with a surface near 19.700 km2), have, in its central areas, maximun depths of around 180-200 m. At the East, the gulf limits with the argentine continental shelf with a mouth of 64 nm wide. At this sector, the maximum depths reachs from 50 to 100 m. the presence of this socle at the mouth and the maximum depths at the centre of the gulf, make the gulf a semi closed basin. This feature, along with the tides, determine a particular system of water circulation
The gulf presents a rich species composition becouse at this latitudes we found the transition between two biogeographic provinces: the Argentine and the Magellanic. Due to this, within gulf waters is frequent the occurance of species common to both of this huge faunistical complexes in all of the zoological gruops levels. This wealth implies also a varied range of commercial species, determining a multi-specific fishing complex.
In this geographic context, the Province of Río Negro have under its jurisdiction the administration and management of the fishing resources, that constitutes the Río Negro Fishing Reserve, that practically includes the whole gulf basin. The Provincial Authority administrates, independently from the National Authority, the natural resourses exploitation based on that the main species of the fishery (hake, longtail hake and shellfish) form unitary stocks within the gulf basin. Due to this, they are independent management units.
