Invertebrates multi-specific fishery certification in the San Matías Gulf ecosystem – Río Negro - Argentina
Since 2002, Río Negro provincial authorities have shown the will to move forward toward the sustainable management of its fishing resources. An example of this is the implementation of the Oceanographic and Fishing Monitoring System (named SIMPO in spanish) developed by the INVAP in 2004. Political desisions like this one have captured the attention and the financial support from international organizations related to environmental conservation like the WWF, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and The Sustainable Fisheries Fund (SFF-RLF). Since 2003, the Fishing and Marine Biology Institute “Almirante Storni” (IBMP), the Direction of Fishing of the Province of Río Negro and Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina (FVSA) (In english, Argentine Wildlife Foundation) started to work developing sustainble managment plans and certification processes for the hake fishery and for the invertebrates multi-specific fishery (scallop, clam, octopus and mussel). The certification of these species will bring better marketing opportunities for Río Negro´s products; ensuring social, political and econimic sustainability to this important ecosystem.
